American shorthair is a robust race owes much to the working cats that early settlers brought to America, but his pedigree goes back to a red tabby male named Belle, who was sent from England to early nineteenth century, and was the first to register in the U.S. under the title Short hair.

Later they were known as Domestic shorthair, but since 1966 the official name has been American Shorthair. This race has a less square than the British Short hair.

Physical characteristics of this race:

Body:
Solidly built, with medium length legs, round paws and tail not too long and tapering towards the blunt end of an abrupt end. Head: Large and cheeks, slightly longer than wide, with slightly rounded ears, a continuous curve from the forehead to the crown and nose of medium length.

Eyes:
Large and wide, the upper eyelid with a curvature almond, the fully rounded bottom, in a slightly oblique placement. Bright gold color except blue or odd eyes in white green or hazel in the silver tabby, green or blue-green in the silver tip.

Coat:
Short, thick, uniform and hard to the touch.

Colors:
Natural white, blue, red and cream, chinchilla and shaded silver, shell cameo, shaded, smoke black, blue, cameo and tortoiseshell, brown, red, blue, cream, silver and cameo, patched tabby, brown, blue and silver, blue cream, calico, dilute calico, bi-color with black, blue, red and cream.
