In the Amazon this strange animal 70 cm long, to the indigenous people called carachama giant. It belongs to the order of Siluriformes loricarildae family. The giant carachama can be found in various South American hydrographic basins, prinicpalmente in the rivers Aguaytia, Pachitea, Urubamba, Pisqui, Purus, Lower Mother of God and the Amazon.
The giant or Panaque carachama schaeferi, as is known in scientific environments, and are considered very important from the ecological point of view as involved in the degradation of organic matter because they are attacking wood (termites consume the water).
It is characterized by the spoon-shaped teeth to scrape off the trunks of trees falling into the water. The robustness of their teeth and muscle adapter allows you to cut pieces of logs. The largest specimen found size 73 centimeters.
