Background

Buffalo is no stranger to man and his friendship comes from the origins of both. The Bubalus bubalis, or water buffalo has its origins in Asia (Asian humid equatorial tropics), the cradle of human culture, and were domesticated about 4,500 years BC They were first taken to Africa, then Europe, Oceania and finally to America, therefore, the buffalo are found in all corners of the earth.

In the course of evolution some herbivores have specialized career and flee from predators due to its speed. Others are full-bodied and equipped with powerful defenses with which lash the carnivores.

One animal of this group known for such behavior is the buffalo.

It was introduced in Venezuela in 1920 by then-dictator Juan Vicente Gómez. Disappear in the 40′s, and until 1962, where important characters of this animal zoos. In 1967, firm initiated the first steps of the national breeding stock. In the 90′s is when it began commercial scale.

Applications

Milk production: The buffalo is the second species in milk production worldwide. Currently in Venezuela there are very few buffaloes herds involved in this production. The protein is located in the order of 4.5%. One liter of buffalo milk is equivalent to 1.7 liters of cow milk. For 1 pound of butter for example, it takes 14 liters of cow’s milk or 10 liters of buffalo milk.

Meat Buffalo meat well fed young animals is juicy, tender, tender and very palatable. Color is darker than the vaccine with the highest percentage of minerals. The animals reached 480 kg at 24 months of age. Buffalo leather is more resistant than cattle, being able to get higher quality items as well as having more layers of fodder for making gloves, shoes, etc.

The buffalo belongs to the subfamily of Cattle, within the family Bovidae, which in turn is included in the order Artiodactyla.
